A girl .. a woman of half my age, told me the other day that "Film is Dead". Just like that. Hard F. Hard D.

So I bought a role of film. I developed it. Scanned it. Uploaded it to an imaging tool. Post processed it. Downloaded it back to my computer. And here it is.

The process was not nearly as instantaneously satisfying as digital, but just to smell the developer and to feel my skin break out in itchy red bumps as a subtle reaction to the photo chemicals makes it totally worth it.

Today is Friday. And Being unemployed and over volunteered, I took a break and dedicated the day to wandering the streets of Salt Lake City. Not to solicit my good looks and long legs, or to peddle the many wonderful drugs that momentarily make the world wonderful, that is until your teeth fall out.. and you lose your mind.

My mission on the streets today was to follow where my camera led. And this is what I found:

I just met Ole Pete. A deep sea diver for 28 years- oil rigs, pipelines, canals, dams.. has dived every continent in the world.
73 years young and pretty much homeless.
Playing the harmonica in the park.
Happy as a clam.

After some research, I've learned that 1 in 100 deep sea divers will die.
Not sure which is better or worse: beating those odds to play the harmonica in the park, or ending up homeless.

It's morning and I'm sitting on Main Street in front of a café next to a man- forty years my senior.

He’s cradling a porcelain cup of black coffee and a Marlboro. I have an iced americano with light cream, to go.

He starts with "Beautiful day, nice look'n truck over there in that handicapped spot".

I agree, "Yup, nice day. Sure like those side runners."

Idle talk. This is what I miss most about the north. He worked for the railroad, his youngest lives in Europe, works for a ‘fancy- pants’ investment firm, and I’m wandering the north wishing that I could stay.

Silence. The comfortable kind, relaxed.

He takes a drag off his cigarette and as he exhales he says "When you wake up dreading going to work three days in a row, that's when you quit." His eyes are still admiring the truck.

"And how is it that you know this?" I ask

"Because that's what I did." Long pause. "They all said ‘what about your pension? Can't walk away from that, it ain't sencicle.’ But I did. Best thing I ever did for myself".

"Then what?" I ask.

"I built all this". He waves his hand from left to right up and down Main Street. "Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what needs to get done." Another pause, another drag off the Marborlo "Just got’a learn to think for yourself, that's all."

The High Country Ranch

The last time that Chris and I were at the High Country Ranch in Wyoming was last year for a funeral. Although it was somber time, it was one most beautiful places that I can remember being.

Last week the family gathered once again at the ranch to celebrate life and the amazing gift of family. I am lucky to, and am grateful for belonging to not just one loving family, but two.

I joke that I married Chris for his family, some days for his brother, and some days for his father, many days for his mother. Right now I have an overwhelming feeling that I married Chris for the whole lot of them.

There were lots of laughs during our stay, lots of fun, not enough sleep and more love than I've been part in a long while.

I have stories about cowboys, of history and relationships. But you'll have to wait for for them because I'm still savoring them for myself, pulling every speckle of warmth from their memory to hold close, to use as fuel as I settle back into the land of the rooted.

This is a place where the people talk like me, move slow like me, step aside and say 'Good Morning'..and mean it.

There's a spring fed pond just my size, a rope swing, and from what I've heard, the worst mosquito season in years- from the perspective of the human- and the best- from the perspective of the mosquito.

I'm ready. Wish us luck at the boarder.

People from all over the world. Really incredible pilots, more importantly, really nice people.

I’ve become irrationally addicted to taking photos with my iphone. So much so, that I left my Canon sitting alone, with a full card for half a week. Sad... sad. And against everything that I stand for in the world of photography.

Three months ago I remember saying "Shooting with an iphone photo app? So Bogus!" And today I could be the spokesperson for iphone photography. I think that it’s a gateway drug into the world of ‘Apple’.

I did take some photos with my actual camera of which I've been slowly sifting through.

The Cow

No-place Nevada. 13 miles deep in BLM land where we decide to sleep. A cow howls- if a cow can, all night, not far from our resting place.

In the morning light we see for the first time what surrounds us. It is beautiful, as expected.

But the cow is still crying, she won't leave her ground. We go to see what is causing her angst. There in a dry lake bed of deep mud is a calve, nose deep, suffocating. Chris says "we need a plank" I turn my head and there is the plank that he asked for.

Chris pulled her free, not without injury of his own. We cleaned her mouth and nose of mud and walked her towards her mother. The mother ran to meet the calve, ingnoring the company of humans.

No matter how long I stay away, my home city always welcomes me back with all that I remember and more.

To wander the streets of Minneapolis, to take in the smells, the colors, the people. The smiles. It doesn't get much better.

Yes, I may be bias, because Minneapolis did make me what I am today, but I cannot think of another city that that has so much depth, where the vibe is so calming, where one can find themself in a comfortable sort of unison with others, even though their differences might be measured by infinity.

Thank you Minneapolis for yet another wonderful visit.

Equals Crazy. Disagree? Come on, let me hear it.. I'm listening. I'm positive that my state of sanity can be challenged, and I'm a part of a family. Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but there hasn't been a dull moment in the thirty something years that I've been a part of it. I've developed phone anxiety, hives.. aversions to The Land of Ten Thousands Lakes, all due to my role in the 'unit of family'.

Today, amidst possibly the craziest act in my family's manuscript, I had a moment of clarity.

Ganesh, who simply put, is a Hindu God, that happens to be an elephant and symbolizes the remover of obstacles and the retainer of success. The thing that I have never understood is that while being an elephant, he rides on the back of a mouse. Why? I ask. And here is my 'Ah Ha' moment: a mouse is skilled at creeping around, it can go pretty much anywhere unseen, but with an elephant on it's back it becomes an obstacle. SO.. the remover of obstacles is himself an obstacle! Ganesha's riding the rodent indicates the need to keep baser aspects of our character under control lest they cause havoc in our quest

Dude, don't be your own obstacle.

I'll say no more. Take it for what you feel it's worth. For me, it's worth is equal to about five sessions of therapy at eighty bucks a piece.

Here is my disclosure as follows: I've been wandering the western half of the states. Specifically from the Pawnee Grasslands of Colorado, to the Great Salt Lake of Utah. I'm in constant awe of the horizon. "Stop" has not yet lost its ability to cause a spike in Chris's blood pressure. I've promised to wait till the vehicle has come to a complete stop before I throw myself out into the cold. And it has been cold.
